The details of how the Wi-Fi remote works have already been detailed as part of our review of the GoPro WiFi BacPac. On the right side of the unit (when viewed from the front), you'll find the Wi-Fi button that activates and deactivates the wireless connectivity with the GoPro app for smartphones or the Wi-Fi remote (which is included with the Hero3 Black Edition, but not the Silver or White editions). I also found the LCD to be a bit difficult to read in direct sunlight. Expect to spend a bit of time on your first outing just looping through the menus and getting used to where the options are. However, there is a bit of a learning curve. I found the screen to be easy enough to navigate using the GoPro's combination mode/power button to change modes and the shutter release to make selections. The Hero3 uses the same improved LCD of the Hero 2, with its monochromatic dot-matrix display. However, the characteristic fish-eye look of the video and photos captured by the Hero3 hasn't been totally removed, as it's sort of a hallmark of the action-camera style, adding a bit of drama to scenery as it speeds by. On the front panel, you'll find the new f/2.8, six-element aspherical lens that is supposed to offer twice the image sharpness and reduce the amount of barrel distortion at the extremes of its 170-degree field of view. The height and width (42mm by 60mm) are unchanged to maintain compatibility with GoPro's line of BacPac add-on modules and rear doors for the clear plastic shell. However, all of that reduction manifests in reduced thickness with a new depth of only 20mm.

EDIT : Sorry for the crappy formatting, I'm on my phone and clearly don't know how to use it properly. The GoPro Hero3 is 25 percent lighter than the previous-generation Hero 2's camera. If you have to choose, I would advise buying a decent lamp rather than the lcd (at least when it comes to filming underwater, the lcd might be very useful in other situations). (It also helps if you set your gear up before the dive so that the camera films whatever you're pointing your lamp at). As I said I don't have the lcd backpack but with the angle of the lens it isn't hard to get a good shot. The lamp I have has a fairly bright hot spot which trends to burn the center of the image of the ambient light is too low -> if you can, try to find a lamp that doesn't have a hot spot.

I'm not a pro and haven't tested every filming solution there is so I'll just share what I do know : My setup is simple : I don't have the lcd backpack and I use the bike seat attachement on my dive lamp (because the body of the lamp is narrow enough, I've seen other divers use a vented helmet mount on larger lamps). Hi, I recently started filming my dives with a gopro 3. Even a red filter needs help when you get deep. Third biggest suggestion, don't forget a slate so you can do white balance after the fact. Some photo snobs get all uppity about Polar Pro filters, but mines pretty good, and BackScatter didn't have their red filter for the GoPro 3 when I went on my last trip (although it's now available for $69. Second biggest suggestion is to pick up a red filter. I've got both a monopod and a simple tray that I use (the tray has a cheapo dive light strapped to the side of it) and it works pretty well. It makes a world of difference for trying to set the camera up and also works okay for previewing footage while still on the boat.īiggest suggestion is to get a tripod mount and put it on either a monopod or create a tray. If you've got the money, I highly recommend the touch LCD screen. You can use the LCD underwater, but mainly it's just useful for framing shots and for telling if you're recording without or not - without it you end up with a lot face shots as you look at the front of the camera to see if it's recording. I've got it, a couple of extra batteries, and the Touch LCD backpack and have taken it down to about 120' with no problems what so so ever. The Hero3 Black is a great little camera.
